The district took its form on 1st April 1958, by carving out the areas of erstwhile Travancore, Kochi & Malabar kingdoms. The word Ernakulam was derived from a Tamil word Erayanarkulam which means Lord Shivas abode as the place is famous for its Ernakulaththappan Temple.

Affectionately called the queen of the Arabian sea, Kochi, peviously named Cochin, is situated on the west coast of India in the beautiful state of Kerala.Kochi with its rich history, cultural heritage and archaeological wealth was the cradle of art and culture in Kerala. The contributions made by highly gifted men enriched its image all the more.Kochi, the Queen of the Arabian sea offers the guests a plethora of charming visuals manifested in the ancient Chinese fishing nets, monuments, synagogue, etc.

Kochi is well connected by air, rail, road and waterways to all major cities within and outside Kerala. Kochi can be regarded as the commercial and industrial capital of Kerala. Kerala is one of the most prosperous states of India, flanked by the Arabian Sea on the western side and the Western Ghats on the eastern side. Roughly speaking Kochi is situated geographically along 10 º North latitude and 76 º East longitude.

Kochi is the most important city in Kerala. It is the second most important city (after Mumbai) on the western coast of India .Kochi is also known as the Queen of the Adriatic. It is also referred to as the Gateway of south India.
