The district of Ernakulam has been drawing the attention of tourists the world over for providing opportunities in sports and adventure of different categories.Marketing of sports events is being done on a large scale to promote sports tourism in the city in various forms.

The tourism potential of Kochi was highlighted on a worldwide scale last December during the Kochi Stopover of the international event, the Volvo Ocean Race organized jointly by Kerala Tourism and Cochin Port Trust.The grand fete was a landmark event which brought Kerala into international spotlight.The event also showcased the rich water bodies of Kerala to catch international attention.

The most recent sports tourism event held recently in the port city was the Volvo Race, the premier yacht race of the world, which started from Alicante in Spain on October 4, 2008. The yachts covered 39,000 nautical miles and stopped at eleven ports, during a period of nine months. The Kochi Stopover was from December 3 to 13, 2008.

Over 100,000 high spending visitors including more than 10,000 foreign tourists attended the event.The Stopover Village at Cochin is going to be in the World Media Lime Light in December 2008. A grand exhibition was featured at the race village which provided a never miss opportunity for business, with more than 250 halls showcasing various brands, products and services.The exhibition was visited by over 100,000 people every day including high spending foreign visitors, tourists, local public and the corporate world.
