Ilaveezhapoonchira

IlaveezhapoonchiraThe most beautiful picnic spot located in the midst of the hillocks near Kanjar located at distance of 55 kms from Kottayam and 20 kms from Thodapuzha. Ilaveezhapoonchira Skirting the Kottayam district are beautiful valleys of Ilaveezhapoonchira, spread over thousands of acres.

Ilaveezhpoonchira, means the valley where leaves dont fall and is so named because the place has no trees. This is also one of the best places in Kerala to witness the sunrise and sunset. It is easily accessible from Palai in Kottayam district. The place is surrounded by three enchanting hillocks: Mankunnu, Kodayathoormal and Thonippara, making the place ideal for trekking.

The verdant landscape punctuated by four gigantic hills, each rising to about 3200 feet above sea level is an ideal place to unwind. During the monsoons when the valley fills up to form a scenic lake, this place unveils yet another beautiful slice of nature.


Erumeli

Erumeli VavarambalamVavarambalam, Erumeli : This mosque is dedicated to Vavar, a companion of the deity - Sree Ayyappa - of the Sabarimala temple. The mosque is unique in that Hindu pilgrims customarily worship here before their trek to Sabarimala. Situated at 60 Km away in the lush green Western Ghats of nature-rich village  this is also the entrance point to South Indias most prominent pilgrim centres - the Sabarimala Temple .

 

 

Anchu vilakku

Anchu vilakkuThis stone lamp post, a masterpiece work and was built near the Changanacherry boat jetty by the renowned freedom fighter Veluthampi Dalawa.

The Changanacherry market, one of the largest in Kerala, was also established by him. The five lamps on this post are lit using kerosene.

The ettunompu (8 day fasting) is the main annual event when devotees from far and wide congregate to participate in the prayers and rituals.The Marthamariam cathedral (St. Marys cathedral) at Manarcad is internationally famous. for the  feast of Virgin Marys Birth are celebrated between September 1st and 8th of every year at the cathedral.Because of the unseen presence and blessings of Virgin Mary, the Manarcad cathedral, the 8 day Fast and other observances have withstood the passage of time and attained international reputation. During the fast days, hundreds of thousands of people from the far corners of the world reach Manarcad to seek the blessings of Virgin Mary. Around this time all roads lead to Manarcad cathedral which is located just 9km. east of the town of Kottayam .

Thazhathangadi Valiapalli

Thazhathangadi Valiapalli kottayamBuilt in 1550 AD, this church belongs to the Knanaya Orthodox Syrian Community which is 2Km away from town. The Persian cross, believed to be one of the seven brought here by St. Thomas , and the Pahlavi inscriptions of this church are famous.
