The progress that Malappuram district attained in the field of education during last decade is tremendous. Great strides have been made in the field of female education. There are 160 High Schools, 337 Upper Primary Schools and 826 Lower Primary Schools. Out of 160 High Schools,4 were upgraded to Higher Secondary and 20 were upgraded to Vocational Higher Secondary. A massive project for quality improvement in education is being implemented in the district.

The Scheme, District Primary Education Programme, aims at a total change in teaching practices. There is one Kendriya Vidyalaya under Central Government, one Navodaya under NCERT at Oorakam and one special school for the blind at Mankada, Pallippuram. Four Technical High Schools also function at Manjeri, Kuttippuram, Nannamukku and Tirurangadi. 5 primary Teachers Training Institutes are there in the district, 2 in the Government Sector and 3 in the Private (Aided) sector.

For training High school teachers, one B.Ed. centre functions at Malappuram. The district is having 4 Post graduate colleges, 7 first grade colleges and 6 oriental title colleges. In the professional sector, there is an Ayurveda college at Kottakkal. There is also an Agriculture Technology Institute at Tavanur which comes under the Agricultural University.

The seat of Calicut University is at Thenhippalam in Malappuram district. It was established in 1968 and it has 101 affiliated colleges, 4 Engineering Colleges, and 5 B.Ed. colleges stretched across 5 districts, from Thrissur to Wayanad. Calicut University undertakes Post Graduate Teaching and Research under 24 faculties. About 1.30 Lakh students are privately registered. Outside the University campus, the 2 study research centres are at Thrissur and Thalassery.

At Malappuram, a college of Applied Sciences having B.Sc. courses in Electronics and Computer Science function under the Institute of Human Resources Development. Computer study sub-centres under the Lal Bahadur Sasthri Institute are functioning at Manjeri, Kondotty, Malappuram and Chemmad. At Valanchery, an Engineering College is coming up in the private unaided sector.
