Trichur with its rich history, cultural heritage and archeological wealth is the cultural capital of Kerala. Trichur is famed far and wide for its grand Pooram festival and a host of other minor festivals. This festival district has witnessed many rulers and dynasties starting with the Zamorins, Tipu Sultan to the Dutch and the British. A cultural center, the Kerala Kalamandalam, the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy are located here.

Trichur has been a pioneer in the healthcare industry since long, both in the fileds of Allopathy and Ayurveda.Amala Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, the famous cancer hospital was established in 1978 as a nonprofit, charitable institution aimed at treatment and management of Cancer in Central Kerala. Over the years Amala has grown to become one of the major voluntary tertiary level hospitals in India having modern diagnostic, therapeutic and research facilities to combat Cancer and other ailments. This 550 bed hospital complex is unique in having three principal systems of medicine namely Allopathy, Ayurveda and Homeopathy in the same campus. Trichur also houses the Govt Ayurveda Hospital and the Medical College Hospital besides Heart Hospital and Mother Hospital.

Rice is the staple food of the people. The Nair , Ezhava and such other castes are not generally vegetarians, though some inpidual members may avoid non-vegetarian food. There is no great difference in the dietary habits of the Christians and Muslims. The routine diet in a family consists of breakfast , lunch, tiffin and supper. Kanji or rice gruel with some vegetable curry and pickles formed the main breakfast until very recently in almost all families, but it has now been replaced by tea, coffee or other beverages taken along with dishes like Dosai , Iddali, Poori, Chappathi and Uppuma.
