Vaikom economy is in a state of flux. The economy was predominantly based on agriculture until the 90s. But the more recent software revolution in India has had its impact on Vaikom too. Numerous computer training instititues have sprung up. Vaikom is famous for its Paddy fields and Coconut groves. Coconut and rice are the major crops and these used to be backbone of Vaikom economy along with Fishing. More recently spices like Nutmeg, Black Pepper have also caught the attention of Vaikom farmers. Another recent addition is Latex. It is expected that Tourism will be the next major thing to hit Vaikom.

Vaikom is located at a distance of 40 km from Kottayam town.Kottayam is well connected to almost all the major cities of Kerala as well as the rest of India by a number of routes of transportation. These include:

By Air
The nearest airport to the district of Kottayam is the Cochin Airport which is one of the busiest airports of Kerala.

By Rail

The nearest Railway station to Kottayam is the Kottayam Railway Station.

By Road
An efficient system of roads connects almost all the different parts of Kerala and neighboring Tamil Nadu with the city of Kottayam. A number of buses traverse through these roads of which a large number are regulated by the Government of Kerala.
