The cashew district of Kollam offers well-developed educational facilities. The rate of literacy is 90.4%. The educational infrastructure includes 479 lower primary schools, 213 upper primary schools, 208 high schools, 13 arts and science colleges, 8 teachers training centres, 2 training colleges 30 ITIs/ITCs, one junior techincal school, one polytechinc and one engineering college. Besides, there are 1072 anganvadi centres too. All the technical and engineering colleges, Arts & Science colleges except a junior college at Chavara are in the private sector.

College, Chathannur, Government College, Chavara, and M.M.N.S.S. College, Kottiyam are the various arts & science colleges available in and around Kollam district.T.K.M. Engineering College in Kollam, Karmala Rani Training College in Kollam, and Mount Taber Training College in Pathanapuram are the technical training institutions in Kollam.

Chavara is a place of tourist attraction situated 14 kms. north of Kollam on the Kollam-Alappuzha road. Thousands of tonnes of mineral sand are exported from Chavara to various countries. The Koilthottam port is situated within the limits of Chavara panchayat. Four major industrial establishments - Indian Rare Earths, The Kerala Premopipe factory, Kerala Minerals and Metals and the Titanium complex - are at Chavara. The Thalappoli Mahotsavom- offerings of lighted lamps in decorated small pans - in the Kottamkulangara temple here is very famous. It falls in March - April. The interesting features of the festival is that men dress themselves as women and carry lamps. This is a time-honoured custom.
